There is no doubt that the sport of bobybuilding can get expensive. There are definitely more affordable options to consider to keep your checkbook from getting more bounce than baby’s got back! The following is a list of things to consider when looking into competing in a bodybuilding show. Some things are totally optional and others are not.

*Possibly optional
**Definitely optional
Trainers/Coaching |
|
You could do this yourself, go with an online coach or one in person. I had a great experience with online coaching but you must find a knowledgeable one. Same goes with an in person coach. Not all trainers know a great deal about this sport. |
*Gym Membership | $20-$250 per month | If you skip the gym membership, you can get by with a squat rack, barbell and bench, dumbbells and a pull up bar at home. Otherwise, a basic gym will do the trick. |
*Supplements | $50+ | You could go crazy on supplements. Stick to the essentials for affordable options such as protein powder and BCAA’s. (Supplements Explained ) |
Food | varies | Depending on what you ate prior to this diet, you will be eating a lot more chicken, fish and vegetables. Food costs for you may go up or down. (Example of my starting diet: Week 1 Printable Week 15) |
Food Scale | $25+ | This is a must have. When eating specific amounts of food, measuring cups just won’t do the trick. Scales are much more accurate |
Weight Scale | $25+ | A great tool to aid in tracking progress. |
Body Fat Tester | $5+ | A nice tool to have to gauge progress with your body composition. Read reviews before buying. See more on the #1 tool in BF testing. |
Federation Membership Card | $60-$120 | Different federations will have different membership fees. Most shows require you to be a member of their federation before you can compete or register for a contest. (NPC, NANBF) |
Competition Entry Fees | $50-$200 | Costs are about $30-$50 per class entered. See more on registering for a contest. |
Hotel and Travel Costs: | varies | Varies depending on how far you are from the show. Competing in local shows keeps your travel affordable. |
*Posing Sessions |
|
Teach yourself with youtube video’s, which is free but, this free option is not as easy as it sounds. Take at least a few sessions with a posing coach or other knowledgeable person to really nail it! |
Competition heels | $40-$50 | You can also add rhinestones to your shoes yourself. |
Competition Suit | $200+ | Suits can range from $150-$1000. You can borrow a suit, buy one used or rent one for about $200+. You can also buy an affordable plain suit, then add the bling yourself to offset costs. |
Competition Tan |
|
DIY Competition tanning products will last about 3 shows. Using the event tanner takes the guess work out and is quick and easy. For your first show, I recommend the event tanner. See more on what to expect and DIY tanning. |
Suit Glue | $2-$10 | 3M spray adhesive or bikini bite spray works well, not the roll on! |
Oil/Glaze | $8-$15 | This may come with the DIY tanning products you buy. If not, you may need your own oil. I use Jan Tana glaze but banana boat spf 4 works great too. Use sparingly. |
**Stage Jewelry | $30-$80+ | rhinestone bracelets on one or both wrists + earrings for bikini and figure. |
Show Day Make-Up |
|
Your make up must be very dark. (dark foundation, foundation to match the tan, eye make-up etc, a good face and eye primer (I went to Sephora). If you buy your own, this make up will last all of your shows. Having a professional do it is nice for a perfect match. |
**Hair styled | $30-$50 | Bikini is a division where this may be more important. Otherwise, you can definitely do your own. |
**Manicure | $15-$80 | I don’t do manicures for shows, I just make sure my nails are in good shape. Honestly, no one is looking at your nails. |
**Waxing | $50+ | A piece of mind to have a Brazilian wax in such a tiny bikini, but not necessary. |
**Photography | $60+ | The event photographer will usually offer packages costing about $60-$75 for all of the pictures they take of you during the show. If you enter more than one class, the photography package may be a bit more expensive. Some woman will schedule a 1 hour photo shoot the week of the show to immortalize their awesome body. This may cost $150+ If anything, purchasing the show day package. It is so worth it! |
**Personal photo shoot | $100+ | You may want to immortalize your hard work. Schedule a personal fitness photo shoot for fun! Definitely not necessary. |
